Register Early - Help us to help you!
Dear Potential Class Patrons, I would like to take this opportunity to encourage each of you to register early for our classes, trips and other activities. In almost all cases, our ability to conduct a class is based on having eight paying participants registered. The decision to run or not to run a program must be made a minimum of three days prior to the advertised start of the class. This allows us the necessary time to inform the instructor and purchase the supplies that are needed for the class. Therefore, it is imperative that you register early in order to assist us in making an informed decision as to whether or not to run a particular program. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. See you in class.

In May 1864, Federal Armies in the eastern theatre under U.S. Grant began an all out drive to destroy the Army of Northern Virginia, commanded by General Robert E. Lee. After bloody stalemates in the Wilderness, Grant swung the Army of the Potomac to the east in order in get around the flank of Lee’s army.

This deadly dance continued through June, with the battles at the North Anna and Cold Harbor.  Lee was finally brought to bay at Petersburg, where the armies faced each other for ten months. The Federals broke through in April 1865. Lee, in an attempt to save his army, fled west, but was eventually boxed in. He surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia on April 12, bringing the war in the East to an end.

This course will cover the events of the war’s last eleven months, discussing the battles, the strategy, the overall military and political situation in the United States and the Confederacy.
